Overview

Is your BizTalk integration with Azure Service Bus on the brink of failure? If you rely on the Service Bus Messaging Protocol (SBMP), crucial changes are imminent.

Note that SBMP will no longer be supported after September 2026.

Microsoft recommends switching to AMQP (Advanced Message Queuing Protocol). This change necessitates urgent modernization for BizTalk deployments still relying on SBMP as their main communication method with Azure.

The Problem in Plain Terms

1. SBMP Deprecation

Microsoft is phasing out its proprietary SBMP connector in favour of the more modern AMQP. This means that eventually, official support for SBMP will be completely removed. It's like having a phone that no longer gets software updates – sooner or later, it won't work properly.

2. BizTalk Uses SBMP by Default

BizTalk Server’s default Azure Service Bus adapter (SB-Messaging) relies on SBMP without providing an out-of-the-box AMQP alternative. This leaves many existing BizTalk solutions in a precarious position as the protocol nears its end-of-life. Imagine driving a car that’s about to run out of fuel, and there are no gas stations in sight.

3. Integration Breakdowns

If SBMP suddenly loses support, your BizTalk-to-Azure integrations might fail unexpectedly. This scenario can lead to operational disruptions, financial setbacks, and tarnish your reputation. Think of it as sailing a ship and discovering mid-voyage that your compass no longer works – it's a recipe for chaos.

Your Options

1. Accepting the Risk

One option is to continue relying on SBMP without making any changes. While this might seem like the easiest route, it carries substantial risk. As Microsoft phases out support for SBMP, any unforeseen changes could lead to integration failures. Such breakdowns would force you into a reactive mode, scrambling to find solutions. This scenario could result in operational disruptions, financial losses, and damage to your reputation. Therefore, continuing to rely on SBMP isn't sustainable in the long term, and proactive planning is crucial to avoid last-minute crises.

2. Implementing a Middleware Bridge

Another approach is to place a middleware bridge, such as Azure Logic Apps, between BizTalk and Azure Service Bus. This strategy effectively bridges the gap to AMQP, allowing your existing BizTalk infrastructures to continue functioning. However, this method often involves extra overhead and may require additional management and maintenance efforts. Despite the complexity, it can provide a temporary solution while you work on a more permanent migration plan.

3. Developing Custom AMQP Adapters

Alternatively, some organisations opt to develop or purchase custom AMQP adapters or connectors. This approach allows for direct communication between BizTalk and Azure Service Bus using AMQP. However, it typically requires specialised coding and ongoing support, which can be resource intensive. Custom solutions can offer flexibility and tailored functionality, but they also necessitate a strong technical expertise and commitment to maintenance.

4. Planning a Modernisation Path

Our recommendation is to consider migrating part or all of your integrations to Azure Integration Services. This approach includes utilizing components such as Logic Apps, Service Bus with AMQP, and Azure Functions. By aligning with Microsoft’s cloud roadmap, you ensure long-term support and continuous innovation. This modernisation strategy not only future proofs your integrations but also enhances your capabilities by connecting to the broader Azure ecosystem. Through this migration, you can leverage advanced analytics, AI, and more, positioning your organisation for future technological advancements.

Why Azure Integration Services

Moving to Azure Integration Services offers a wealth of benefits for organisations seeking a modern, scalable, and cost-effective integration solution. The pay-as-you-go (PAYG) model ensures that you only pay for the resources you use, providing financial flexibility and efficiency. Azure Integration Services leverages the latest technology, facilitating seamless integration with a wide array of Azure services such as Logic Apps, Service Bus with AMQP, and Azure Functions. This integration not only modernizes your infrastructure but also enhances your capabilities by connecting to the broader Azure ecosystem, allowing for advanced analytics, AI, and more. By aligning with Microsoft’s cloud roadmap, you ensure long-term support and innovation, reducing the risks associated with outdated systems and preparing your organisation for future technological advancements.
